How to use Typing Teacher

Get from sign-up to your first scored test in a couple of minutes.

1. Create your account

Open the app and sign in with email or Google. Your progress, history and stats sync to your account across web, desktop and mobile.

2. New to typing? Start with lessons

The lessons journey teaches the keyboard from scratch — home keys first, then the top and bottom rows, capitals and punctuation. Each lesson pairs a drill round (repetition for muscle memory) with an exercise round (accuracy under light pressure), so you build clean technique before chasing speed.

3. Choose a practice passage or live test

  • Practice: pick any English passage to type at your own pace.
  • Custom passages: upload your own text and practice on it with the same live metrics and grading (Free: 1 passage, Pro: up to 25).
  • Live tests: join a timed, exam-style series with multiple phases — keyboard test, demo and final — just like exam day.

4. Set your exam settings

Configure mode, backspace rules, error highlighting and your speed/accuracy targets so practice matches the exam you're preparing for.

5. Type with live feedback

As you type, you'll see gross WPM, net WPM and accuracy update in real time. Mistakes are highlighted so you can self-correct and build accurate muscle memory.

6. Review your result

After each test you get a detailed result summary — gross and net WPM, accuracy, and every error counted by category (omission, substitution, addition, spelling and half mistakes), converted into marks and a pass/fail verdict using court-style grading. Everything is saved to your test history so you can track improvement and keep your streak going.

Tips for faster progress

  • Prioritise accuracy first — speed follows once mistakes drop.
  • Practice a little every day to keep your streak and build muscle memory.
  • Use live tests to rehearse exam pressure, not just raw speed.
